Derm Talk is a monthly segment where we ask top board-certified dermatologists to weigh in on your most frequently asked questions. Each month, we tackle a new question that is top of mind for this community. This month, the question is "Should you apply sunscreen on infants?" Read on for what top expert, Sydney Givens, PA-C, had to say.
Should You Apply Sunscreen on Infants?
For many of us, applying daily sunscreen is second nature. However, if you have a newborn, their delicate skin may not be quite ready to be lathered with SPF just yet. According to Sydney Givens, PA-C, "Before [6 months], their skin might be too delicate and sensitive for even the gentlest sunscreens, so other sun protection methods—mainly shade—should be used instead."
So, what sun safety tips should you follow for babies under 6 months?
Babies Under 6 Months
When it comes to sun protection for newborns and young infants, the number one rule is simple but crucial: avoid direct sun exposure whenever possible. However, there are ways to protect your little one while actively on the go.
For moments like these, Givens recommends opting for wide-brimmed hats and a UV-protective stroller cover or umbrella for your little ones.
If there’s no way to avoid a small area of sun exposure—like the tops of your baby’s hands or feet—talk to your pediatrician about applying a tiny amount of 100% mineral sunscreen. Look for formulas with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are physical blockers that sit on top of the skin instead of being absorbed.
While it’s not ideal, a small dab of mineral sunscreen is still considered safer than letting your baby burn.
The Best Sunscreen for Babies (6 months and up)
Once your baby is old enough for sunscreen, it’s time to find a formula that’s gentle, effective, and easy to use. The top recommendation: stick with 100% mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. These are physical blockers that are far less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Avoid sunscreens with ingredients like oxybenzone, which the FDA has flagged for further testing due to concerns over absorption into the bloodstream.
Secondly, it is important to select a product you enjoy using. "My all-time favorite sunscreen brand is MDSolarSciences, and I often get similar feedback from parents! I think the MDSolarSciences stick and KidCréme are a must-try!"
Top Picks for Baby-Friendly Mineral Sunscreens:
- MDSolarSciences KidCréme & Mineral Stick: Lightweight, dermatologist-developed, and parent-loved (harder to find, but worth it!)
- Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby Stick SPF 50: Drugstore favorite that’s dermatologist-recommended and fragrance-free
- Blue Lizard Baby SPF 30+: Gentle, mineral-based, and stocked at most Targets and drugstores
- Thinkbaby SPF 50+: High protection, water-resistant, and easy to apply
- Babo Botanicals Clear Zinc SPF 30: EWG-verified, great for sensitive skin
- Pipette Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50: Lightweight, baby-specific formula that rubs in smoothly
When looking for sunscreen, selecting a product with SPF 30 or greater is the main guideline when following the AAD recommendations. Need more product picks? Forbes’ guide to the best baby sunscreens is a great resource with even more dermatologist-approved options.
Final Tips
Do your best, and try to teach your children how to apply it in a fun way! Depending on their age, you can lay down a towel and show them how to paint on the sunscreen stick. A pump sunscreen is also a great way to entertain, enhance motor skills, and help you while you’re gathering other items.
